Did you know that April was Stress Awareness Month?  That means that health care professionals across the country joined together to increase public awareness about the causes and cures for the modern stress epidemic.   Epidemic?  Really!?  Yes, indeed!   According to the 2013 Work Stress Survey, 8 out of 10 (or 83 percent) of employed Americans said they are stressed out on the job.  That is a 10% increase over last year’s survey.

Recent findings also indicate that job-related stress is taking a toll on Americans’ health.  Of course we all know that with an increase in stress there is a greater risk for heart attack; but did you know that increased stress can also speed up the aging process?  It also raises a woman’s risk for diabetes.  For some, too much stress can lead to weight gain (or loss) and it is major contributing factor to insomnia which in turn becomes a vicious cycle because lack of sleep can leave you vulnerable to even more stress!

The good news is that finding ways to manage your job related stress isn’t about making huge changes or rethinking your career; it’s actually about focusing on the one thing that has always been within your control…YOU!
